Just a really nice observation deck

As you may recall, I spent the day in Koblenz a few weeks ago – the first day trip I’d been on since moving back to Germany.

The town itself is lovely and well worth the journey from Dusseldorf. We had quite an action-packed day, taking in the old town, a nearby castle, the famous Deutsches Eck, a UNESCO-listed church and a cable-car ride (not to mention running for our train, only to miss it. Twice.)

But in the end, one of the things that left the biggest impression on me wasn’t any of the sights – it was an observation deck.

It sounds so strange, but this is a really nice observation deck. Honestly.

I can’t put my finger on why exactly the structure appeals to me so much, but it has such interesting angles and is such an interesting shape, I really like it.

The structure is two-tiered, offering two views out over the valley.

It is in the shape of a triangle (though its ‘end point’ lies one storey above the ‘start point’), which means that you can gradually walk along its length and take it in from every angle.

Its design allows you to see the scenery through the structure – it doesn’t obscure your view of the landscape.

I can’t find out much about it, unfortunately, but I think it was built as a temporary structure for a flower show and was then made permanent.

Without sounding too “Kevin McCloud” from Grand Designs, I think it really does suit its environment.

Even looking back through the photos, I think the structure is fantastic – really dynamic. And I think the best part is that they have turned a building with a simple function into an attraction of its own.

All in all – a really nice observation deck.

What do you think?
Have you come across a structure which really appealed to you before?
